Become a Master Naturalist: The Main Page

How Do I Start?

In a year or less, you will: Collect a firm understanding of natural sciences in the context of Virginia’s ecological systems; deepen strong, foundational knowledge through advanced training and experience; then extend that knowledge to the community through volunteer service.

To begin your journey, follow these simple steps:

  • STEP 1: Find a chapter near you and inform them of your interest in becoming a Virginia Master Naturalist.

  • STEP 2: Take a 40-hour basic training course offered by your local chapter.  The times the course is offered and the cost of the course varies by chapter.  Scholarships may be available.

  • STEP 3: Complete 40 hours of approved volunteer service in citizen science, stewardship, education and outreach, or chapter leadership.

  • STEP 4: Complete 8 hours of approved continuing education to continue your lifelong learning.

Both the initial 40 hours of service and 8 hours of continuing education must be completed either within one year after the end of the basic training course, or within a subsequent calendar year to earn Certified Virginia Master Naturalist status.

Following initial certification, volunteers maintain their certification by completing 40 hours of volunteer service and 8 hours of continuing education each year.

Graduates of a Virginia Master Naturalist basic training course may also be active Virginia Master Naturalists without being Certified in any given year, simply by re-enrolling and doing at least some approved volunteer service each year.
