This event is part of an ongoing invasive eradication project; the removal of garlic mustard being the second battle on "Kudzu Hill." The site has some heavily infested areas, but there is a possibility of "search and destroy" missions for sporadically located plants.
It's recommended that volunteers bring water, a snack, sun screen & insect repellant. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants and long sleeves. Dress for the weather, workday will continue in light rain. Volunteers will be working with Arlington County staff and neighborhood volunteers to remove invasive species from an overgrown woodland area in the park. Focal species include English ivy, multiflora rose, and bush honeysuckle. Two weeks later we will be planting 100 trees on the site to create a Centennial Grove for our neighborhood's 100 year anniversary.
Volunteers should wear long pants and long sleeves as there could be some poison ivy present. Please bring gloves and pruners. Training will be provided.

Ivy Creek is holding a general work day on May 8. We have organized an invasives effort there for that day. We are particularly interested in attacking European barberry, which is getting started in several areas, but hasn't really taken off yet. We might also possibly tackle oriental bittersweet. Note: These plants have thorns. Dress accordingly.
Ivy Creek has some tools, but if you have them, spading forks, mattocks, long handled loppers and/or clippers would be useful. (Be sure to put your name on any tools you bring.) We also recommend that you bring water.

Christiansburg

Be prepared to pull up Tree of Heaven seedlings and to cut bush honeysuckle and autumn olive sprouts. We will also be picking up trash to tidy up the parking lot and trails.
Those interested in carpooling can meet at the US Forest Service Office, off South Main Street in Blacksburg, at 9 a.m. Focal species include Ailanthus, Bush Honeysuckle, Autumn olive.
It is suggested to bring gloves, pruners, loppers or small shovels and to wear long sleeve shirts, and pants. Bring a lunch and plenty to drink. There are no restrooms at the preserve, so please plan accordingly. Need ability to identify Ailanthus seedlings, bush honeysuckle, and autumn olive. Participants will be shown these different plants if they are not familiar with them. Must be able to walk over trails and through brush to remove invasive plants. Elevation gain of several hundred feet.

Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve Invasive Alien Plant Removal The Weed Battalion (Weed Bees) is a group of Master Naturalists who have been working with Ron Circe, the Preserve Manager, to remove invasive plants in Banshee Reeks' Old Field Loop and other fields in order to allow native plants to flourish and grow. Ron has identified nine invasive plants at Banshee Reeks and each is removed during different seasons with different methods to ensure they do not survive and that any wildlife that may be nesting in them is not harmed. All equipment is provided by Banshee Reeks but you will need to bring work your own work gloves and beverages. Focal species will be Autumn Olive, Japenese Honeysuckle, Porcelin Berry.

Linden / Front Royal

Volunteers need to have the ability to pull & bag invasives. Site Leaders will show how to identify the targeted species and proper removal technique at the start of the workday.

Directions: Head south on Reston Parkway, make a left at Glade Drive and head east for about 4 miles, Glade Pool will be on your left. We will meet in the parking lot near the tot-lot and head down the asphalt path behind the houses to collect the garlic mustard along the way. If you are late and we are no longer at the parking lot, follow the path behind the houses into the woods until you find an RA vehicle.

Reston Association staff will give a brief introduction to invasive exotic plants and on how to identify garlic mustard. Volunteers will pull garlic mustard in the Old Trail Natural Area behind the Old Trail Drive horseshoe. The garlic mustard has spread throughout the woods behind Old Trail Drive and along Snakeden Branch stream. We will spread out through the woods starting along the pathway from the parking lot and head towards the stream. Volunteers will receive black trash bags to fill with garlic mustard. Volunteers will also receive pre-poison ivy swabs, but please wear long sleeves and long pants if you are sensitive to poison ivy. Reston Association will provide gloves, water and snacks.
